Weekly Newsletter & Agenda for Tuesday 11/23/10

1. AGENDA FOR TUESDAY, 11/23/10:

0700-0800: OPEN FORUM. This week we'll discuss topics of general interest while also assisting with job searches, business advice, referrals, and other networking needs. The Open Forum is also a great opportunity to give an expanded introduction if you so choose, to share any updates on your personal or professional situation.

2. UPCOMING PROGRAMS:

11/30/10: Open Forum.

12/7/10: Dick Sargent (USNA '57) is an independent distributor with the Shaklee Corporation. He'll speak with us about independent distibutorships as an attractive source of supplemental income or as a "Plan B" career.

3. REMINDER - Same hotel, but new meeting space:

For our Tuesday morning meetings at the Marriott-DTC, we now meet inside the coffee shop (Front Range Trading Post) within the hotel. The new GM of the hotel has kindly arranged to reserve a major portion of the seating area of the coffee shop for our use each Tuesday morning. There is ample seating and it's a bit off to the side of the main coffee operation, so we think this will be a better situation for us long-term. The spot where we had been meeting became problematic due to its proximity to the restaurant operation and related disuptions for us and for the hotel. Our new area inside the coffee shop provides our own reserved space and should work better for us.

4. ITEM OF INTEREST: Congratulations to John Barry, MG, USAF-Ret.:

Back in February, one of our Biznet meetings was hosted by retired USAF Major General John Barry, who is Superintendent of Aurora Public Schools. He gave a great talk about his unique post-retirement career path, as well as the immense challenges and innovative solutions that he's trying in his school district. Many of us came away sensing a great model for how to continue the selfless service instilled as a military officer. While recognition is surely not his main motive, it appears that others are indeed noticing. Here's a short item from the editorial page of Denver Post on Saturday (11/20/10):

"Well-deserved kudos. While a lot of attention is paid to Denver Public Schools and its forward-thinking superintendent, it often seems as if Aurora superintendent John Barry is working under the radar as he tries to turn around Aurora Public Schools with innovative strategies and high expectations for students, teachers and staff. But Barry was recognized for his success this past week as he was named the 2011 Colorado Superintendent of the Year by the Colorado Association of School Executives."

Have a great week and a Happy Thanksgiving.
