Weekly News & Agenda for Tuesday, 2/19/13

1. AGENDA FOR TUESDAY, 2/19/13:

0700-0730:  INTRODUCTIONS & ASSISTANCE
During group introductions, tell us what's new for you lately, especially any networking needs.  It's likely someone will be able to assist with referrals, advice, or other help with your particular need.  Even if you don't have immediate needs, consider joining us on Tuesday for the long-term networking value.

0730-0800:  SPEAKER/PROGRAM

LTC Scott Sherman (USMA '92) will provide an overview of the mission of the Colorado National Guard.  LTC Sherman is a fulltime guardsman in the state G3 office (Operations/Planning).  He recently completed his battalion command of 3-157 Field Artillery, where he oversaw the transition of the battalion's weapon system from Multiple Lauch Rocket System (MLRS) to High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).

Thanks to David Graves (USMA '97) for arranging to have LTC Sherman speak with us this week.

2. UPCOMING SPEAKERS/PROGRAMS:

-- 2/19/13: (this week):  LTC Scott Sherman (USMA '92) - see above.
-- 2/26/13:  Bill Sumner (USMA '78) will provide a mini-seminar on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).   Bill is a neural psychologist, skilled in the latest in advanced neural technology.  He will talk about troubling developments in the standards for diagnosis of PTSD, and how the military and veteran support communities fall short in addressing it.  You will come away from this talk with very specific tools that will allow you to begin to ameliorate the symptoms and better understand this misunderstood condition in a radically different way.

If you'd like to invite a speaker or lead a discussion on any future Tuesday, just let me know at panicciaj@aol.com.

3. AMERICAN LEGION EVENT FOR FEMALE VETERANS - 2/23/13:

Terri Shelefontiuk writes as follows, about an upcoming event.  She is Chair of the Female Veterans Action Committee for the American Legion, Department of Colorado.

I wanted to get the word out on an important event coming up for female
veterans on Saturday, February 23, at noon.  It is being hosted by the Smoky Hill United Methodist Church in Centennial.

As I go around the state and visit posts, and based on comments from my
committee members and several female veterans I know personally, the number
one complaint I hear is the hurdle and unfriendly culture they face in using
VA health care.

This year, one of The American Legion's National initiatives is a renewed
focus on female veterans. Reverend Dr. Kathy Haley, a FVAC member and former Air Force Lieutenant, will be leading a discussion after the screening of the movie The Invisible War, on
the 23rd.

This is an invitation to ALL female veterans (you do not have to be a
Legionnaire). We hope the event is informative but, most importantly,
provides an atmosphere of camaraderie.

A CALL FOR JUSTICE
