Agenda for: Tuesday 28th September (2010-09-28)

Agenda for: Tuesday 28th September (2010-09-28)
0700-0730: INTRODUCTIONS & ASSISTANCE
Roundtable introductions and discussion, including job search assistance, business referrals, advice, and other networking assistance.

0730-0800: PROGRAM
In a follow-on to Ron Meier's topic last week, Rich Oppenheim will lead a discussion on job market reconaissance in a slow growth market. Discussion will focus on how we are mapping our military skill set to compete with hundreds of experienced civilian job seekers for the same position.
Upcoming Programs
10/5/10: Mary Haddon will talk with us about Rocky Mountain Honor Flight. RMHF takes WWII vets back to Washington DC to visit the WWII memorial as well as other military memorials in the DC area.

10/12/10: Rear Admiral Dick Young (USNR, Ret) will speak with us about his efforts to help vets find jobs via a task force involving the Colorado Department of Labor, U.S. Department of Labor, and Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve (ESGR).

10/19/10: Laura Hardin is an independent recruiter who will talk with us about the job market and her recruiting services. She recently led a similar discussion for the Biznet group in Colorado Springs.
Job Opportunities
None to pass along this week.
Additional Information
1. BIZNET MEMBER LOOKING FOR EXPERIENCED GRANT WRITER:
Timothy Kitt (USMA '71) is looking for an experienced grant writer for a tech start-up needing initial funding. Grant writer should have proven track record, especially with government entities such as NSF, NIH & DARPA for a tech start-up needing initial funding. Would prefer someone local - Colorado front range. Please contact Timothy directly at timothy.t.kitt@gmail.com

2. NEW WEEKLY BIZNET COMMUNICATION METHOD (Sign-up Required):
As recently discussed, Biznet is planning to transition to a blog to replace this current email format, as our means of providing you with weekly communication and other updates. We plan to complete this transition over the coming weeks, and then discontinue the current method (this email you're reading) in October.

You'll need to sign up (opt-in) to continue to receive the weekly updates. It's relatively easy. You only have to sign-up once. Once you do so, you'll receive an email everytime there's new Biznet info posted, including the weekly newsletter.

Go to: http://academybiznetblog.blogspot.com/

Once there,

1. Enter your email address in "Subscribe via Email" box.
2. Click the "Subscribe" button.
3. A new window pops up - Enter the verification letters in the box.
4. Click "Complete Subscription Request".
5. You'll get an email from "Feedburner Email Subscriptions". Open it & click the link to confirm your subscription.
6. You're done! You'll now get automatic e-mails when the blog is updated.

Many thanks to Dave Jackson (USMA '73) for setting up this new method for us.

The main driver for this change is our need to overcome persistent issues with the weekly email being blocked by spam filters, or related issues. We will still keep our main Biznet web site, as well as our social media sites (Facebook and LinkedIn). We plan to update the main site with clear links to those social media sites, as well as a link to the new blog. In this way, the Biznet web site will remain the primary entry point for new members, with simple instructions for how to get plugged into these other Biznet communication tools.
Thanks for supporting the Academybiznet of Colorado!

Agenda For Tuesday: Sept 21, 2010.................................
0700-0730: INTRODUCTIONS & ASSISTANCE: We'll begin with roundtable introductions, allowing plenty of time for anyone who'd like to go a bit in-depth about their current networking needs or a topic of interest. The remainder of this session Ken Pethe  Eagle Aerospace will give a presentation.
0730-0800: PROGRAM
Ron Meier (USMA '66) will lead a discussion on options for grads leaving the service for civilian opportunities. Of particular focus: Should grads seek a salaried position, or start their own business? Current or recent job seekers are encouraged to attend to provide input.

Ron adds the following additional thoughts in support of this topic:

Infrastructure is in bad shape in the U. S. See http://infrastructurereportcard.org/ Problem is no level of government has any money to upgrade any of this. So, something will have to be done using private industry innovators to help governments decide on privatizing these projects.

Academy grads are heavy into engineering disciplines; government contracting options for employment are likely to decline sharply in the future. So, how can Academy grads become the business and financial innovators to grab this work and create their own jobs? It's a problem, but academy grads are problem solvers. Make it happen instead of putting out resumes hoping someone else will make it happen and have the wisdom to give them a job as a project manager.
