Busting Myths About VA Health Care Eligibility

Rumor mills are permanent fixtures in schools, offices and wherever people congregate, and most of the time they're pretty innocuous.  But myths and rumors that deal with health--in this case Veterans health--are a serious matter that can prevent qualified Vets from seeking the care they both need and deserve.  Many have come up in the comments section, and others I hear from the guys in my old unit.  The myths won’t die unless they are addressed publicly and clearly, so we present you with the most common we hear, and the straightforward answers they need. Five Myths About VA Health Care Eligibility Myth Number One I wasn’t injured in the service, so I’m not eligible for VA health care. Status: False One of the most common myths revolves around eligibility for health care at VA.  Many think that you have to first establish a disability rating before you can start to make appointments, see doctors and receive medication.  That is not the case.  If you served in the military, even during peace time, and were honorably discharged, you likely qualify for ...Read more »

Weekly Newsletter & Agenda for Tuesday 11/23/10

1. AGENDA FOR TUESDAY, 11/23/10:

0700-0800: OPEN FORUM. This week we'll discuss topics of general interest while also assisting with job searches, business advice, referrals, and other networking needs. The Open Forum is also a great opportunity to give an expanded introduction if you so choose, to share any updates on your personal or professional situation.

3. REMINDER - Same hotel, but new meeting space:

For our Tuesday morning meetings at the Marriott-DTC, we now meet inside the coffee shop (Front Range Trading Post) within the hotel. The new GM of the hotel has kindly arranged to reserve a major portion of the seating area of the coffee shop for our use each Tuesday morning. There is ample seating and it's a bit off to the side of the main coffee operation, so we think this will be a better situation for us long-term. The spot where we had been meeting became problematic due to its proximity to the restaurant operation and related disuptions for us and for the hotel. Our new area inside the coffee shop provides our own reserved space and should work better for us.

4. ITEM OF INTEREST: Congratulations to John Barry, MG, USAF-Ret.:

Back in February, one of our Biznet meetings was hosted by retired USAF Major General John Barry, who is Superintendent of Aurora Public Schools. He gave a great talk about his unique post-retirement career path, as well as the immense challenges and innovative solutions that he's trying in his school district. Many of us came away sensing a great model for how to continue the selfless service instilled as a military officer. While recognition is surely not his main motive, it appears that others are indeed noticing. Here's a short item from the editorial page of Denver Post on Saturday (11/20/10):

"Well-deserved kudos. While a lot of attention is paid to Denver Public Schools and its forward-thinking superintendent, it often seems as if Aurora superintendent John Barry is working under the radar as he tries to turn around Aurora Public Schools with innovative strategies and high expectations for students, teachers and staff. But Barry was recognized for his success this past week as he was named the 2011 Colorado Superintendent of the Year by the Colorado Association of School Executives."

Weekly Newsletter & Agenda for Tuesday, 16 Nov

1. AGENDA FOR TUESDAY, 11/16/10:

0700-0800: OPEN FORUM. This week the floor is yours for discussion on topics of general interest or personal updates. And as always, we'll do our best to assist with job searches, business advice, referrals, and other networking needs. Thanks to all who arranged such great speakers (or led a talk yourself) this past few months.

2. NEW MEETING LOCATION (same hotel, but new spot):

Beginning this week we'll meet inside the coffee shop of the Marriott - DTC. The new GM of the hotel has kindly arranged to reserve the seating area of the coffee shop for our use every Tuesday morning. There is ample seating and it's a bit off to the side of the main coffee operation, so we think this will be a better situation for us long-term. The spot where we've been meeting (next to the restaurant operation) has become more of an issue in recent months due to the limited seating, the large TV which must remain on, and the occasional disruptions for us and for the hotel. Having our own reserved space inside the coffee shop should work out better for us.

6. You're done! You'll now get automatic e-mails when the blog is updated.

Many thanks to Dave Jackson (USMA '73) for setting up this new method for us.

The main driver for this change is our need to overcome persistent issues with the weekly email being blocked by spam filters, or related issues. We will still keep our main Biznet web site, as well as our social media sites (Facebook and LinkedIn). We plan to update the main site with clear links to those social media sites, as well as a link to the new blog. In this way, the Biznet web site will remain the primary entry point for new members, with simple instructions for how to get plugged into these other Biznet communication tools.
Thanks for supporting the Academybiznet of Colorado!

Denver Metro Newsletter

Agenda For Tuesday: Sept 21, 2010.................................
0700-0730: INTRODUCTIONS & ASSISTANCE: We'll begin with roundtable introductions, allowing plenty of time for anyone who'd like to go a bit in-depth about their current networking needs or a topic of interest. The remainder of this session Ken Pethe  Eagle Aerospace will give a presentation.
0730-0800: PROGRAM
Ron Meier (USMA '66) will lead a discussion on options for grads leaving the service for civilian opportunities. Of particular focus: Should grads seek a salaried position, or start their own business? Current or recent job seekers are encouraged to attend to provide input.

Ron adds the following additional thoughts in support of this topic:

Infrastructure is in bad shape in the U. S. See http://infrastructurereportcard.org/ Problem is no level of government has any money to upgrade any of this. So, something will have to be done using private industry innovators to help governments decide on privatizing these projects.

Academy grads are heavy into engineering disciplines; government contracting options for employment are likely to decline sharply in the future. So, how can Academy grads become the business and financial innovators to grab this work and create their own jobs? It's a problem, but academy grads are problem solvers. Make it happen instead of putting out resumes hoping someone else will make it happen and have the wisdom to give them a job as a project manager.

Upcoming Programs.....................................................................

Next week,  Rich Oppenheim will lead a discussion on job market reconaissance in a slow growth market. Discussion will focus on how we are mapping our military skill set to compete with hundreds of experienced civilian job seekers for the same position.

He NEEDS as many job seekers to attend & help in this process.  Beyond that, see (click here)

NEW WEEKLY BIZNET COMMUNICATION METHOD (Sign-up Required):

As recently discussed, Biznet is planning to transition to a blog to replace this current email format, as our means of providing you with weekly communication and other updates. Our current plan is to complete this transition over the coming weeks, and then discontinue this current method (this email you're reading) in October.

You'll need to sign up (opt-in) to continue to receive the weekly updates. It's relatively easy. You only have to sign-up once. Once you do so, you'll receive an email everytime there's new Biznet info posted, including the weekly newsletter.

Go to: http://academybiznetblog.blogspot.com/

Once there,

1. Enter your email address in "Subscribe via Email" box.
2. Click the "Subscribe" button.
3. A new window pops up - Enter the verification letters in the box.
4. Click "Complete Subscription Request".
5. You'll get an email from "Feedburner Email Subscriptions". Open it & click the link to confirm your subscription.
6. You're done! You'll now get automatic e-mails when the blog is updated.
