Weekly News & Agenda for Tuesday, 28 June 2016

1. AGENDA FOR TUESDAY, 28 JUNE 2016:

0700-0730:  Introductions & Assistance

Tell us about yourself, especially any networking needs.  We can help with job search assistance, business advice, referrals, and general networking.  Feel free to also bring up any brief items of interest.

0730-0800:  Speaker - Kelly O'Connor

Kelly O'Connor with Senior Care Authority will talk with us about the services they provide, including community matching (placement) and elder care navigation and consulting.

Many thanks to Kurt Schlaefer (USAFA '70) for arranging to have Kelly speak with us this week.

Bio for Kelly O'Connor:

Kelly O’Connor, MA, CSA® Area Owner Senior Care Authority, Denver Metro   Kelly O’Connor knows what it’s like to care for loved ones through all stages of illness and aging. For most of her 20s, Kelly cared for older and ailing family members, serving as a caregiver for her mother who had cancer, and as a long-distance caregiver for her two grandmothers. At a young age, she held the responsibility of making critical healthcare and estate decisions during a time of crisis.
After the unfortunate passings of her mom and maternal grandmother, Kelly turned her focus to a career in corporate communications for many years with great success, but her heart was calling her to contribute her talents and experiences in a larger, more meaningful way.  She returned to school, received a master’s degree in psychology, and began sharing her senior care experience with others. While volunteering for a local hospice in Denver, a friend called and said, “I have the job for you.”
“And the rest is history,” Kelly says. She began a heartfelt second career in the senior living industry, serving first as a move and transitions coordinator for a large retirement community. To date, she has helped more than 250 families with decisions regarding assisted living, memory care, and long-term care skilled nursing, as well as independent living and home care.
Kelly’s passion for seniors is evident by her dedication to continuing education in the field. She holds a multi-disciplinary certification with the Society of Certified Senior Advisors as a CSA® as well as her Professional Certificate in Gerontology from the University of Colorado. She is also a Certified Eden Associate with the internationally renowned Eden Alternative, a Masterpiece Living Academy’s Successful Aging Associate, and a Naomi Feil’s Validation Training Institute devotee. She has also served as a Music and Memories volunteer for residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia and currently teaches at Clermont College of Creative Life, where the average student age is mid to late 80s.

3.  THE MARRIOTT'S COFFEE SHOP HAS MOVED:

Our meeting location (the DTC Marriott's coffee shop) has moved within the hotel.  Upon entering the current main entrance of the hotel, turn right and proceed toward the new front desk.  The new coffee shop is just prior to the front desk.

The seating area is more spacious than the old coffee shop, and still provides a semi-private setting for our meetings.
