Biznet member Dave Jackson (USMA '73) will discuss "Reiki:  Healing Hands or Whoey?".  Dave is a Reiki Master.  His talk will address such questions as - What is Reiki?  Does it work?  How did it start?

3.  BIZNET SCHEDULE:

As noted above, our meeting this coming Tuesday/18th will be our last for 2012.  In any other year, we still meet during the holiday weeks, but since the holidays fall directly on Tuesdays this year, we'll take a break.

Hope to see you on Tuesday, but if you can't make it, please have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, with warmest wishes for all holidays that are special for you this time of year.  Thank you for your service in all its forms, especially for our country and in helping fellow grads.

New Google Resource Aims to Help Military Veterans Become Entrepreneurs

Over the last several years, Google has offered military veterans and their families several tools, such as the Veterans Job Bank, for finding jobs and transitioning to civilian life. The search giant is taking the initiative a step further, offering a new resource for veterans who are interested in starting their own businesses.

Evan Roth is Nelnet’s Executive Director and Chief Learning Officer and a Principal in Roth Consultancy International.  Evan will speak about Business Coaching – he is a Certified Professional Coach.  He will review his path to become a certified Business Coach, how coaches can help businesses and individuals, and when/how to engage a coach.

Here's a more detailed bio on Evan Roth:

Evan Roth currently serves as Nelnet's Executive Director and Chief Learning Officer. His responsibilities include organizational effectiveness, leadership development, corporate planning and strategy, human resources, associate well-being, and enterprise-wide learning. Roth joined Nelnet in April 2003 as Managing Director of Loan Services.
Mr. Roth's experience in the technology industry includes two years as Controller-Latin America for JD Edwards, with responsibility for leading the accounting and finance teams in Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil. During the prior seven years, he was General Manager (and previously CFO) for Interactive Software, an international business intelligence software and services provider. Roth led that company's roll-up IPO into Condor Technology Solutions and subsequent divestiture to Allen Systems Group (ASG). He also served as VP-Finance/Administration and Board Member for Hertzler Systems, a quality management software provider.

Roth has extensive experience in finance and accounting, general management, international expansion and operations, process improvement initiatives, human resources, innovation, and M&A/integration.  He is a Certified Professional Coach from the Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching, an Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioner, and an Associate Certified Coach under the International coach Federation.  He is also a Principal in Roth Consultancy International, a coaching and consulting company.

Prior to the joining the technology industry, Roth had nine years of progressive experience in commercial banking, including accounting, compliance, credit, mergers and acquisitions, and operations responsibilities. He is a CPA (inactive) and earned his bachelor's in accounting from Goshen College, Indiana. He also has a degree in Financial Management and Control from the School for Bank Administration, Madison, Wisconsin. He is bilingual in Spanish, and conversational in Portuguese.  He serves as Chairman of the Board for Healing Waters International, a non-profit company that provides clean drinking water for the poor in Latin America.

Roth makes his home in Littleton, CO with his family.

VHVnow is a new and rapidly growing nonprofit.  This position would be hectic and extremely rewarding.  The staff, board, volunteers and clients are fabulous; the need for VHVnow’s services is great.

Responsibilities:
            - Liaison with fiscal sponsor, CNDC, including all activities concerning weekly                         
                  invoices and revenue deposits, proper coding, records maintenance, contracts, etc.
            - Liaison with board – including recruitment, orientation, training, support, notification
                 of meetings, preparation of board materials, site location, etc.
            - Liaison with community agencies and organizations
            - Oversees preparation of data collection (clients, volunteers, donors), yearly surveys,   
                 annual reports, analysis of data, donor information, reports, etc.
            - Oversees operation of drop-in Center, including supplies, appearance, relationship with
                 landlord, supervision of phone calls/drop in clients and visitors
            - Strategic planning with staff/board/stakeholders/fiscal sponsor.  Determining                     
                  measurable goals for program/staff
            - Develop budget with appropriate board members, soliciting senior staff input, including
                 plan for both revenue and expenditures
            - Maintain overview of budget on a monthly basis
            - Maintain and enhance policies and procedures
            - Supervise outreach/communication to media, community and to veterans/families
            - Overall oversight, as situations emerge
            - Supervise closely both program staff and resource development staff, including    
                approval of all new programs and fund development initiatives, conduct staff   
                evaluations 2x/year
            - Participate in fund development/meetings with donors, etc.  Support development staff
                 and program staff with “face time” with donors, volunteers, clients
            - Maintain and enhance the core values of the organization
            - Possible launch of social entrepreneur venture and/or capital investment
            - Interaction with volunteers and clients 
     
Desired Experience, Skills and Attributes
            -    Dedication to and understanding of veteran issues and core values of the
                  organization
            -    Ample combination of non-profit, educational or relevant experience
            -    Experience with volunteer management, program management and/or financial
                 management
-       Ability to commit for at least two years, providing enthusiasm/passion; willingness to put in more than 40 hours per week, if necessary
-       Vision, self-motivation, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit
-       Great flexibility, patience and consideration
-       Leadership experience with clients, volunteers, board and community 
-       Basic computer skills (Word, Excel)
-       Additional computer/social network skills preferred
-       Knowledge of local communities/agencies/nonprofits preferred

Compensation:
            $50,000 to $53,000 first year, based on experience.  Benefits set by CNDC and include health, vacation, etc.  A bonus can be considered if revenue exceeds expenses.

This week Biznet member Pat Tierney (USNA '87) will talk about his new company - Mirror Image Ventures - which is building a clean-tech reverse logistics network.  Thanks to Kurt Schlaefer (USAFA '70) for arranging to have Pat speak with us this week.

Here's a brief bio: 

Pat Tierney started his business career in functional leadership positions in manufacturing operations, marketing, sales and product development at Case Corporation (CNH) and Danaher, rising to general management positions focused on growth and strategic turnarounds of small, international businesses at Danaher (DHR), Eaton (ETN) and Berkshire Hathaway (BRK).  Later, as operating partner for a private equity fund, he served as consultant, advisor and board member to diverse middle market companies to drive strategic improvements in their businesses and build a legacy for their founders.  Among the companies he worked with are Aljon, a manufacturer of scrap processing equipment and landfill equipment and EZ Pack, a manufacturer of refuse trucks.  Pat holds a BSME from the United States Naval Academy and MBA from Harvard Business School.

Government Procurement Title of Position: Procurement Counselor Summary: Colorado Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) is seeking a Procurement Counselor for the western and northern Colorado area. The individual will be officed at a suitable location in Golden CO. PTAC is a nonprofit organization governed by a Board of Directors and funded by public and private contributions with dollar-for-dollar matching funds from the federal government. PTAC is headquartered in Colorado Springs with satellite offices throughout the state. Description of responsibilities: The Procurement Counselor will deliver quality, cost effective, and expeditious counseling to Colorado PTAC clients for obtaining government contracts. This will include general counseling on business development, which involves knowledge of how to create professional relationships with government program managers and contracting officers, as well as with prime contractors.
