3.  CALL FOR BIZNET SPEAKERS - 2015:

We have a speaker or two in the pipeline, but let's get a strong slate lined up for January and beyond.
Heard a great talk lately?  Know someone in an interesting line of work?  Maybe someone in your network has a great career story or interesting volunteer activity.  Or maybe that person is you -- about half of our Biznet speakers are our own members who share interesting insights about their work, their network, their hobbies, volunteer activities, or some other topic of interest.
Whether it's you or someone you know, just let me know and I'll be happy to put them on our schedule.  Send me a note at panicciaj@aol.com.

3.  THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914 -- 100 Year Anniversary:

Many of you know this story, but it's worth noting that this year we mark its 100-year anniversary.  The info below is adapted from several sources.

World War I began in the summer of 1914, with some leaders on both sides believing it’d be over by Christmas.  Strange how that notion prevails in the early days of so many major conflicts.  This one would continue for 4 more years, with millions of lives lost in battles that some would later describe as apocalyptic.

By Christmas of that first year, fighting along the Western Front had already devolved into brutal trench warfare.  But on Christmas Eve, somewhere along that 500-mile front, the firing from the German trenches suddenly stopped.  Then the British stopped their firing as well, and all was quiet.  The Germans began singing Christmas carols while they decorated their trenches.  The British heard this and responded with their own singing.

One version of what happened next involves a German soldier emerging from his trench, armed only with a bottle of wine, inviting the British to come over.  Regardless of who made the first move, soldiers from both sides soon came out of their trenches to meet in no-man’s land.  This spread along a significant portion of the front – it’s believed as many as 100,000 soldiers participated

The spontaneous Christmas truce lasted the entire day.  German and British soldiers met to shake hands and exchange Christmas greetings, cigarettes, schnapps, uniform buttons, and even names and addresses.  Some brought makeshift Christmas trees from the trenches.  The Germans shared beer and the Royal Welsh Fusiliers shared tins of beef and jam.  According to some accounts there were even soccer matches that day in no-man’s land.

By the end of the day the sides had returned to their trenches.  At that point, in one sector, a German officer and British officer faced each other from the top of their own trenches.  The two bowed, saluted, and went back into their trenches.  A few minutes later, shots were fired into the air, signifying the end of the truce.   The war was on again.

At the American Job Center’s no cost Add-A-VETERAN Hiring Event veterans will have this very opportunity, to meet with many ready to hire employers. Veterans are invited to join the American Job Center for the Add-A-VETERAN Hiring Event on Thursday, November 13, 2014 from 9:00am – 11:30am at Wheat Ridge Recreation Center, 4005 Kipling Street in Wheat Ridge.

All registered veterans and their spouses will be provided a list of positions that are open from each company in attendance. Veterans will be given the opportunity to target their resumes and conduct research on the businesses in advance of this event. If you are a veteran or a spouse of a veteran and would like to attend, register at http://conta.cc/1o3SUKa.

This event also provides businesses a chance to meet with, review qualifications of, and speak directly to numerous highly qualified applicants who are veterans. Why hire a veteran? 3.  SPECIAL EVENT - TRIBUTE TO A FIGHTER PILOT - October 10:

On Friday, October 10, 1800-2200, Wings Over The Rockies Air & Space Museum will host its 5th Annual Tribute to a Fighter Pilot.  Biznet member Greg Anderson (USAFA '72 and President/CEO of the museum) writes as follows:

We are honoring General Ron Fogleman this year, and expecting a great turnout. It’s not often you get to rub shoulders with a Chief of Staff. We’ll make Wings into a Friday night O’Club for stories around a number of fighters with open cockpits, etc. Proceeds support expanding education outreach to develop future leaders.

Here's an except from the event web site:

General Fogleman graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1963 and performed combat duty
as a fighter pilot and high-speed forward air controller in Vietnam and Thailand.  In 1994, he became the first graduate of the Academy to advance to Chief of Staff of the Air Force.
General Fogleman will share fascinating stories of his career, like the tale of his dramatic rescue in Vietnam.  During a ground attack mission, his F-100 took numerous hits from ground fire. He ejected, evaded capture and, in a dramatic rescue, clung to the gun bay door of a U.S. Army Bell AH-1 Cobra gunship and was carried 20 miles to a special forces camp.
