Weekly News & Agenda for Tuesday, 5/28/13

Hope everyone's having a great Memorial Day weekend, as we honor the 1.3 million men and women who've made the ultimate sacrifice to gain and preserve our freedom.

1. AGENDA FOR TUESDAY, 5/28/13:

0700-0800:  Introductions, Assistance, Discussion

It's an Open Forum this week.  Grab some coffee and join us for discussion on topics of general interest.  As always, we'll focus especially on any networking needs.  Chances are good that someone in the group will be able to offer advice, referrals, contacts, or other assistance with your networking needs.

2. UPCOMING TUESDAY SPEAKERS/PROGRAMS:

-- 5/28/13 (this week):  Open Forum.
-- 6/4/13:  TBD.  If you'd like to invite a speaker or lead a discussion on this date or any future Tuesday, just let me know at panicciaj@aol.com.

3.  USMA '72 BANQUET WITH COACH BOBBY KNIGHT AT KEYSTONE ON 6/22/13 (open to all service academy grads & guests):

Biznet member Larry Aubrecht (USMA '72) writes as follows:

TO: Denver Alumni Association/Pikes Peak Alumni Association/BizNet

Last fall the West Point Class of 72 decided to follow the example of a number of other classes and begin to have annual mini reunions between the 5 year reunions held at West Point. As a starter, we decided to piggyback off of one held by the Class of 71 in Keystone last year.

Ours is being held this year starting on Wednesday, June 19th going through Sunday, June 23rd with a main banquet being held the evening of Saturday at the Keystone Conference Center starting with a Benny Havens Hour at 6 pm and the dinner starting at 7 pm. Those wanting to stay for a few nights can use our reservation code for our discounted room rates – see below.

The highlight of the evening will be a presentation of the Class of 72 “Proud & True” Leadership award with honorary class membership to Coach Bobby Knight who coached the West Point basketball team between 1965 and 1971 winning 102 games during that period. For our plebe year, the team was 18-10 going to the NIT and those wins along with going to the NIT were sorely appreciated by us as plebes that year. He was 24 years old when named head coach in 1965 at West Point after being an assistant coach from 1963. Nicknamed “The General”, Coach Knight ended up winning 902 games as a Division I head coach before retiring. Co-author of “The Power of Negative Thinking”, he definitely has his own perspective on winning and what it takes to get there.

We would like to invite members of the Alumni Association along with their spouses, kids and friends to share this evening banquet with our class on Saturday evening, June 22nd and hear Coach Knight’s comments as he accepts this award. These tickets will be on a first come basis based upon space availability. The dinner cost will be $85 per person. Benny Havens will begin at 6 pm with a cash bar.

Please email Larry Aubrecht at larry.aubrecht@gmail.com with your requests and then mail the check made out to “Class of 72 Mini Reunion” to:
                 Larry Aubrecht
                 5109 S. Dudley Street
                 Littleton, CO 80123

Questions: Call Larry Aubrecht at 303-898-0595.

Accommodations – Prices range from $157/night for a 1 bedroom condo to $238/ night for a 3 bedroom condo. Keystone Lodge rate for a queen is $159.  Call direct to the Keystone Resort at 1-800-258-0437 and give group code: “GC4USM” to access our discounted group rates which are available from the Sunday before the start through the Wednesday after.

Thanks to Dave Jackson (USMA '73) for arranging to have Mr. Gregory speak with us this week.

Here's some additional information on the Colorado Veterans Incubator:

Colorado Veterans Incubator - an Integrated Business Accelerator - “Providing Veteran Entrepreneurs with support for their new businesses”.  Created in 2013 as a Colorado non-profit organization and modeled after an organization funded in Wisconsin by the US Department of Veterans Affairs.  We will provide a “virtual operation” (non-real estate based) business accelerator with the following services:

·         Mentors matched to the veterans business
·         Complete 21st Century business training curriculum - with certificate upon completion
·         Coaching to maximize veterans background and business interests
·         Networking skills in a non-threatening environment
·         Related business services program

From your group (Biznet), we would have interests in individuals who want to mentor, volunteer, speak or help in fund raising.

Hopefully this is the overview you were looking for.  See you soon.  Best regards,

Paul Gregory

-- 5/28/13:  TBD or Open Forum.

3.  GRAD SEEKING ASSISTANCE:

Charles Frederick (USNA '84 and past Biznet member) currently lives in Poland but is looking to relocate back to the U.S./Colorado.  He's looking for something in Program Management or Training.  If you can offer adivce, referrals or assistance, please reach out to Charles directly, at chazgosiafred@lycos.com

Charles writes as follows:

POSITION:
I feel that Project/Program Management would fit what I have been doing.

#1) Deadline adherence has been played a critical role in the jobs I have held.  Example:  Private Language School...the students 'contract' for a specific number of lessons.   The coursebook chosen has to be completed in an orderly fashion to ensure that everything is taught and tested in the time allotted.  The same is true at the public school, but I have to be more flexible as there are other 'events' that cut into the lessons.

#2) Managing various projects at the same time management.   Teaching many different levels of learners(this year I have taught up to 10 different grade levels) requires strict time management and preperation.  The finished 'product' (lessons) must also meet stringent expectations of both the Principal(Boss) and Stuents(Customers).

INDUSTRY:
Probably something in the "Training" field would at first glance be the best fit(22 years as a Teacher) and while that is true, I don't want to limit myself to only that sort of industry.  Just about any industry that requires "attention to detail' in their operations as well as critical scheduling guidelines and deadlines would find me to be an excellent candidate for employment.

COMPANIES:
Given my international living experiences and language knowledge(German: Fluent; Polish: Conversational) I feel that an International Company with ties to Europe would jump at the chance to bring me on board.

I have a "Profile" posted on LinkedIN (http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=150620709&trk=tab_pro).  Feel free to take a look at it and pass it on to any interested people you may know.

Here is an excerpt from Charles's resume, listing his work experience:

Summary
Certified teacher with over 20 years experience in very unique educational settings.   Superb planning and organizational skills with collateral duties in project management.  Interact extremely well with individuals from all levels of education and experience.  Unparalleled written and verbal communication skills; develop documents to the target audiences, geared towards their learning and understanding level.  Learns procedures thoroughly.  Highly experienced in foreign cultures, particularly Polish and Central European Cultures.   Dynamic, innovative, and self-starting.  Progressive responsibilities and experience with minimal supervision.  Versatile, adapting quickly to new requirements and assuming new responsibilities with ease.  Trustworthy; previously held top secret clearance.
